about the project

towards the future of
human-centric IEM education

The LEONARDO project is an Erasmus+ KA220 initiative that redefines industrial engineering education through a human-centric, Industry 5.0 perspective. It develops open, digitally enhanced learning environments – such as the LEAF smart brewing factory – where students engage in hands-on, interdisciplinary experimentation combining AI, XR, and digital twins. The project emphasizes ethical human-AI collaboration, empowering learners to critically assess technology while maintaining responsibility in decision-making. By integrating technical, social, and ethical competencies, LEONARDO aims to bridge the gap between academia and industry, fostering resilient, sustainable, and inclusive workforce skills aligned with evolving industrial and societal needs.

Duration: 2 years | Total funded budget: 400’000 Eur | Timeline: 01/09/2023 – 28/02/2026
why it matters

the LEONARDO vision

The LEONARDO project aims to support the digital transformation plans of higher education institutions (HEIs) by introducing innovative teaching methods and increasing the capacity and readiness of these institutions to manage an effective shift towards new education paradigms in IEM.

the LEONARDO objectives

LEONARDO aims to devise, develop and test innovative teaching methods, materials and tools for human-centric industrial engineering and management (H-IEM) in the light of the emerging Industry 5.0 paradigm.
ERASMUS+ KA220-HED 2023
Objective 1
To design, install, and “5.0-tise” a small-scale replica of a brewing system (called LEAF, Learning and Experimenting open-Access Factory) that will serve as a hands-on learning environment and as an incubator for human-centric student ideas
ERASMUS+ KA220-HED 2023
Objective 2
To shape the future of H-IEM Education and training and equip individuals with the skills, knowledge and tools they need to thrive in an ever-evolving industrial environment
ERASMUS+ KA220-HED 2023
Objective 3
To nurture a European community of faculty and HEI staff committed to reinforcing the education & training systems and triggering a modernisation of IEM education in the light of human-centricity in Industry 5.0

explore our Industry 5.0 Smart Brewing Lab

Learning factories are the gold-standard of IEM education and training. However, they lack engagement, dynamic production processes and a focus on human-centricity. As part of the project, two Learning & Experimentation open-Access Factories (LEAFs) were designed and created.

open resources for educators and trainers

It is no longer enough to teach technical proficiency; we must foster critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and adaptability. Our resources are designed to help teachers guide students through the intersection of advanced technology and human values.

Teacher's Handbook

The LEONARDO Teacher’s Handbook is the capstone educator resource, consolidating all project results, best practices, and teaching recommendations into a single comprehensive guide for professors, lecturers, trainers, and instructors wishing to teach human-centric IEM in the context of Industry 5.0.

Classroom Resource Kit

The LEONARDO classroom resource kit provides IEM professors and instructors with a practical, ready-to-use collection of teaching materials for human-centric IEM courses. It comprises lecture slides covering Industry 5.0 and H-IEM concepts, LEAF-based business cases illustrating human-centric factory scenarios, a use manual for LEAF educational services, and group and team project examples.
